Look at the globe, and take in the sheer mind-boggling vastness of the Pacific. And yet, practically every single one of its habitable islands were occupied by the Austronesians in deliberate colonization expeditions, using nothing more than double-outrigger canoes ( trimaran, Indonesian call it ” perahu bercadik”) made with stone age tech – no metal!
In a vast sweep starting from somewhere in South East Asia, they reached every little rock in the Pacific, including Easter Island, Hawaii and New Zealand. They even sailed straight west through the Indian Ocean, all the way to Madagascar! They were probably the first humans to set foot there, in spite of it being much closer to Africa.
There is evidence that sustained trade was carried out between the Pacific Islands, separated by thousands of miles of blue ocean. Wooden trimaran sailing boat having advantage with speed and agility, modern trimarans using much better materials and navigation technology to sailing all around the world. Even now US Military adopting the trimaran to build their battleship.
Children in Indonesia very familiar with the legendary folksong, telling us the story of our ancestor as brave sailor. But the formal history at our school never wrote the Austronesian’s voyage all across Pacific and Indian Ocean, and our ancestor pictured far more closer as farmer than sailor, a bold paradox. The question lies at the era, the ancestor at what era? Stone age, or pre collonialism era?
This map may show the probability of MtDNA connection between Indonesian, Taiwanese, Madagascar, Maori New Zealander, Aboriginal Australian, and Pacific Islanders ( or maybe the American Indian from Andes Mountain too, their skin seems brownish like us, and the black hair too). It will induce the similarity of vegetation ( coconut and banana) among this islands, the materials of wooden trimarans ( teakwood), and the origin of rice cultivation for modern world.
Yes, man made history may tell us, the former children, the glory of our ancestor, the ego pride that we are better than the others, and what make them different from us. But the ecology tell us a better history, the brotherhood of mankind.
